Sustainability
Irwell River Park will provide significant sustainability and green infrastructure benefits to support national priorities for a low carbon economy.
The Park will help Greater Manchester to fully realise its economic potential through a vastly improved quality of place and environment which will support land values, investment and tourism. Irwell River Park will promote healthy lifestyles, reduce surface water flooding through increased planting, significantly improve biodiversity, and replace road journeys with those by foot or cycle thereby cutting congestion, carbon usage and air pollution.
Opportunities for enhancing the already varied ecology of the river banks and waterway itself will be grasped, with improved areas for wildlife both in the water and along the riverside route. Development either side of the river will be encouraged to meet the highest standards, and to provide better linkages to the areas adjoining the river.
