Delivering Irwell River Park

The partnership leading the delivery of Irwell River Park recognises the monumental benefits the Park will bring to the Manchester City Region, creating real and lasting improvements for the 100,000 people who live near its banks.

The Programme

As a strategic regional site, Irwell River Park will deliver new:

  • Connections – focused on bridges and lateral connections between the employment and visitors centres which will enhance and increase economic connectivity and accessibility to support future economic growth;
  • Placemaking – a new premier public realm which will reinforce and underpin the Regional Centre’s economic and social resurgence, strengthen its economic vitality, environmental quality and ability to attract substantial housing and commercial investment; and
  • Routeways – a high quality, continuous, sustainable and accessible routeway and transport corridor from MediaCityUK to the heart of the Regional Centre and beyond. This will contribute significantly to the creation of a single destination for business, residents and visitors.

Major sub-regional benefits include:

  • 16,000 gross jobs
  • £605 million of new investment
  • £734 million new GVA growth
  • 6 million additional visitors
  • 13.7 hectares of brownfield land reclaimed or redeveloped
  • 6,996 metres of new waterside route
  • 6 new bridges

Irwell River Park will not only create significant green infrastructure benefits, but will also support national priorities towards low carbon economy. The Park creates 8km of sustainable transport corridor and will improve the quality of the surrounding areas, creating investor confidence and setting the scene for increasing investment.

The Park will link tourist attractions and economic destinations, promote healthy lifestyles, reduce flooding, improve biodiversity and replace road journeys thereby cutting congestion, carbon usage and air pollution.

Given the scale of benefit, the three council leaders at Salford, Manchester and Trafford, alongside the Chairman of the Central Salford URC board, are passionate about delivering this new waterfront destination – recognising the momentous impact it will have on the City Region as a whole.
